Hikkaduwa is famous among tourists around the world for its natural attractions. Wide, clean golden beaches, magnificent coral formations, ocean with crystal clear water and hot sun are just to name a few. Hikkaduwa is also quite famous for an active nightlife, thus Hikkaduwa has become a favourite holiday destination among young tourists.
Hikkaduwa is famous for water sports such as surfing, boogie-boarding, snorkelling and scuba diving. Kite – surfing and wind-surfing are also growing in popularity. There is a number of great surf points with clear, warm water in the Hikkaduwa area, thus making the place a main surfing destination in Sri Lanka and annually attracting surfers from around the globe.
Hikkaduwa is also a place for underwater delights. Site of the famous coral gardens, hire a glass-bottomed boat or goggles and flippers and explore the fantasies under your feet. The remarkable coral reef runs just offshore and is inhabited by various kinds of exotic fish and turtles.
While glass-bottomed boat rides are ever so popular and commonplace, the serene Hikkaduwa Lake offers canoe rides that are splendid for couples and those who simply wish to spend a few undisturbed moments amidst the tranquil natural habitat herewith. With numerous aerial species flocking in, this lake truly is a paradise, along with monitor lizards and monkeys making random appearances every now and then. For those who love nature and animal life, a visit to The Turtle Research Centre is a fascinating place to explore. It is located about 2 kilometres away from the town centre and is a place that is dedicated to protect these endangered species.
There are also numerous shops that sell local handicrafts, batik fabric, gems and many other Sri Lankan delights, to take away as memories of your exquisite holiday under the tropical sun.
