Bentota is located 64km south of Colombo in the South-western coastal belt of Sri Lanka. Just across the Bentota Bridge over the River Bentara also called the ‘Bentota Ganga’ is the coastal town of Bentota. Bentota is a very pretty rural area, beautiful greenery landscape. Most of the land is well shaded and sheltered by tall trees with coconut palm trees dominating the landscape.
Bentota is famous as the prime beach resort of the south-western and southern coastal belts of Sri Lanka. Bentota Bay Beach just over the bridge is the most popular twin beaches along the coast. The coast towards the further South too is complete with lovely topical beaches making it ideal for a perfect beach holiday with the golden sun and sand. Apart from stunning views of the sea, you can also enjoy some exciting water sports at Bentota beach.
There is a lot to do in Bentota. Apart from relaxing by the turquoise waters, there are a number of exciting places worth visiting. The Brief Garden is a wonderful stretch of perfectly designed landscape. Spread over a couple of acres of land which is located about eight kilometres off Bentota, Brief Garden houses mesmerizingly beautiful Japanese-style gardens and lawns inspired from the colonial days. It has been home to the famous architect Bevis Bawa, some of whose works are showcased here, along with several other artists from Sri Lanka as well as abroad.
Another activity you can do while you visit Bentots is paying a visit to the Cinnamon Island, which is a popular attraction close to Bentota. It is an age old cinnamon plantation set on an island which has been run by a single family for generations. Here you can learn about the processing of cinnamon for its various uses.
For nature lovers, a must visit place is The Turtle Hatchery Project at Bentota Beach. Up to five endangered species of turtles have been frequenting a stretch on this undisturbed beach for a long time now. The turtles are allowed to hatch and thrive in a protected area before being set free. It is a great place to learn and enjoy the world of turtles.
Apart from various other activities, there are a few religious places that should be visited during your stay in Bentota. Kande Vihare Temple is one of the most popular Buddhist temples of the country as it houses Sri Lanka’s tallest statue of Gautam Buddha and the Sri Kalyanarama Maha Viharaya, which is a temple renowned for the ancient marble statue of Lord Buddha.
